Corbin Fritz

Director, Designer, Deviser

Hello, and thanks for visiting!

Here's a bit about me...

I'm a Theatre Artist based out of Indianapolis with a B.A. in Theatre from Butler University. While at Butler, I studied and trained as a director and theatre designer with specific focuses in devising, new works, and social justice theatre. During my senior year, I started the student theatre group Sandbox Student Productions. Sandbox was dedicated to workshopping new student plays, and producing staged readings of social justice plays as fundraisers for related causes. Through Sandbox I directed readings of The Laramie Project, A Patch of Earth, The Library, and, funnily enough, A Christmas Carol. Through Sandbox I was able to coordinate workshops of Strings Attached by Ian Hunt, and 21 Notches on His Gun: The Life and Times of Billy The Kid by Jacob Herr, Faustball: Part I  by Jim Fiddes, and The Blue Jar by Jeffrey Bird.

While at Butler I was able to experiment with form, devising, and deconstruction through a series of productions. These pieces included Variations on the Death of Trotsky by David Ives, Ivanov's Women based on Anton Chekhov's Ivanov, and We Said NEVER AGAIN based on The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. These explorations were influenced by a semester studying drama in London under Marina Calderone (author of Actions: The Actor's Thesaurus), followed by months of experiencing and studying European theatre, and finally bookended with an intensive at the legendary Moscow Art Theatre School. These experiences changed my life forever and contribute directly to the creative process, form, and style of my work.

I've also had the good fortune to assistant direct for some incredible humans and directors on projects such as You Can't Take It With You (Indiana Repertory Theatre, dir. Peter Amster), The Hotel Nepenthe (Phoenix Theatre, dir. Bill Simmons), Vino Veritas (Phoenix Theatre, dir. Bill Simmons),The Winter's Tale (HART Theatre, dir. Robert Neal), A Midsummer Night's Dream (Butler University Theatre, dir. Constance Macy), the new adaptation Stories from Dark Alleys (Butler University Theatre, dir. Elaina Artemiev), and the world premiers of Halftime with Don by Ken Weitzman (Phoenix Theatre, dir. Bryan Fonseca) and The Pill by Tom Horan (Phoenix Theatre, dir. Bill Simmons).

I am also the Artistic Director of Character House Theatre Company and have written, produced, and directed original shows such as Doctor ChekhovRussian Roullette, and The Vortex. I have also produced and directed new Live-Cinema adaptations of Antigone, and am now underway on Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov produced with the help of an Indiana Arts Commission Individual Advancement Program grant.
